Importance of Puppetry in
the field of education lies in the fact that this medium helps in developing
imagination, creativity and observation skills in the children. Puppets can be
used as effective aids in conveying knowledge on diverse topics (even sensitive
topics) in a student friendly manner. As a part of B. Ed curriculum we
were given a workshop on puppetry making and production by Mr. Venugopalan
Nair, former ISRO engineer and Ms. Parvathy.
The workshop on puppetry, by Mr. Venugopalan Nair and Ms. Parvathy were carried out in two phases. In the initial phase, Sir and Madam gave us an idea on the different types of puppets and their effectiveness in capturing the attention of the children thereby enhancing the effectiveness of classroom transaction. Then they taught us how to make puppets. Once we had prepared our puppets in groups, they asked us to prepare short scripts using two characters so that we could perform it before the audience.
The workshop held in
college on puppetry was indeed a very informative and fruitful one. The
resource persons were able to elaborate to us on the relevance of using
creative expressions in the classrooms. They revealed to us that teaching is
indeed an art that can shape the imagination of students to unimaginable
heights. The workshop has indeed widened our prospects as teachers as we are
now equipped with one more art to heighten the effectiveness and charm of our
class.
